This self-portrait captures a moment at home experimenting with meditation goggles. The title plays on the idea of a self portrait, where the gaze of the sitter is focussed inwards instead of at the viewer.
The goggles strobe the wearer with lights and sound at different frequency, to shift the brain towards Alpha and Theta waves, most commonly associated with deep meditation states.
The eyes are obscured by the goggles in the painting, challenging an important aspect of a traditional portrait. The white colour and chromatic shadows of the goggles allude to the calm, spacious meditative inner state, contrasted with the colourful and patterned blanket and foliage. The picture on the wall is a motif which refers back to the inner meditative state.
